Our Beliefs

Growth Mindset

First Love Yourself values a growth mindset. When individuals incorporate a growth mindset, challenges are puzzles to be solved--rather than insurmountable obstacles. Furthermore, when working with others, we always presume positive intentions.

But first, love yourself

First Love Yourself fully believes that its members must practice the mission of self-love by having compassion for themselves and others, and creating connections on an individual and community-wide level.

By practicing self-love on a daily basis members advocate for their personal needs and self-care.

Setting the Foundation

First Love Yourself believes that youth have what it takes to be successful and resilient--when the right tools are available to lay the groundwork. Through its workshops and subsidized counseling sessions, FLY is contributing to the  foundation in which youth can grow, foster empowerment, resiliency, and strength.

Social Justice

First Love Yourself recognizes the power dynamics that exist in the social constructs of the Oak Park community.  FLY’s mission is to increase accessibility  to care, and provide services that empower.

Furthermore, First Love Yourself values different backgrounds, experiences, and cultures and will actively work to create a team that is diverse as the youth it serves.

Self-Awareness

For our organization to be most effective, we must first become self-aware. We do this by acting in ways that promote dignity and respect to our fellow staff, volunteers, and clients. We also work to empower ourselves and others. Furthermore, we consider the contributions we are able to make not only to the organization, but also to the community as a whole.

Passion for the cause

First Love Yourself values passion. We want every member who joins our team to feel passionate about the mission, our clients’ success, and the work that we do.

Brave Space

First Love Yourself values a “brave space” in which all members are able to speak their truth within an inclusive environment. When uncomfortable topics arise, rather than shy away from them and table the conversation, First Love Yourself tackles them head on. We explore our discomforts with colleagues and promote a supportive environment of sharing.
